Qs: recently heard that
timing belts tend to
break more offen
during winter. Is this
true and if so, why?

A: Unfortunately this
true. The reason is really
quite simple.

in the cold of winter, worn engine belts become

brittle. When a belt is cracked or very worn it

can break very easily.

A broken timing belt can cause a lot of
- very expensive damage and will definately
leave you stranded,

Many modern overhead cam engines
have what is knovm as interference valves. This
means that if the valve is depressed when the
piston is at the top of its stroke, the valve will hit
the piston. When a timing belt breaks, this is
exactly what happens, resulting in bent valves
or worse.

if your belt is due to be changed in the
next six months or you're not sure when it was
last changed, you should have it changed or
inspected at the begining of the winter season.
