BORDES OF media dropped
in to pay their respects, eat all
the food and drink all the
booze of the new owners of
Massimo’s, that popular
Italian hideaway on Hornby.

There were colorful balloons all
over, wonderful Italian tidbits and
red and white Italian wine. The tal-
ented Ivan Nagy played the piano
and the trumpet, both at the same
time, and simply entranced the
guests. Sporting their new white
restaurant owners’ T-shirts were
Tom Peacock, Kent Gilchrist,
Greg Douglas, Joe Leary, Marlene
Cvitkovich, Terry Lashman,
Sharon Lee and U.TV’s Jack
Tomik. Mexico's charming Carlos
“Jampe, Barbara and John Winter,
Phil and Rruce LeGree, Sid and
Mike Murphy and Brian Pound
were there. The Italian Consul,
Walter Lentini, cut the colorful
Italian ribbon to officially open the
dining spot.

You'll be very happy to know
that none of the new owners are
actually going tc cook any food,
thank goodness. They'll leave that
important function to the executive
chef who started the restaurant 14
years ago, Massimo Natoli...

More than 200 friends and col-
leagues attended the gala Variety
Club Heart Award reception and din-
ner presentation at the Waterfront
Centre Hotel last Wednesday
evening. -

They were there to honor founder
and longtime member of Tent 47,
Art Jones. Arthur is the only presi-
dent of the Variety Club to have
served three consecutive terms.
Arthur’s Heart Award for 1993 was
presented to an individual displaying
understanding, empathy and devo-
tion to mankind.

There were many other awards as
well like the six Hey Rube Awards,
the Community Heart Award which
went to Fort Nelson, the Pioneer
Award. the Special Corporate Award
along with many others. The evening
was well emceed by the Bobbsey
twins — actually it was maestro Dal
Richards and his confrere broad-
caster J.J. Richards, who fought
over the microphone all night long.

evening during the reception was to
have that superb musician Harry
Boone playing familiar favorites on
the piano. Arthur also received a
Presidenual Citation from the recent
International Conference in israel in
which his dedication and commit-
ment to Variety's special children
was extolled...

Great turnout last week at Peter
Wall’s new apartment complex at
his Wall Garden Centre Hotel for the
5th-annual Symphony of Fire lun-
cheon leunch, And what a spectacu-
lar setting it was from the penthouse.

The countries competing this year
in the skies over English Bay are
Japan, Spain and Italy and the con-
test dates are July 30, Aug. 3 and 6
with the grand finale on Aug. 10.
Special guests included the Consul
General of Japan, Mr. Nosaka,
Vancouver City Councillor Den
Beilamy, the owner of the hotel,
Peter Wall and Benson and Hedges’
Bob Llewellyn, fireworks producer
Frank Furtado, PR man Doug
MacPherson from Toronto and Mr.
Fireworks Ray Greenwoud...

Despite the weather it was a mar-
vellous party list Thursday at the
home of the American Con. Gen.
Mr. Michael Gallagher and his pert
wife Martha. It was an carly party
to celebrate the 218th anniversary of
the Independence of the U.S.A. even
though the actual anniversary date is
July 4. Michael and Martha had their
backyard simply awash with red,
white and blue bunting, bews and
ribbons — and awash it did in the
downpour! What a shame!

So instead we partied indoors in
their beautifully remodelled man-
sion, enjoyed every bit of Americana
cuisine and loved the great music
supplied by the U.S. Navy Dance
band from Seattle — the same band
that played the next day down at the
Trade and Convention Centre for the
Canada Day celebrations.

Both national anthems were sung
by the guests while Mark Andrew,
GM of the Hyatt Regency, showed
up with a surprise — a huge birthday
cake to mark both Canada’s 127th
and America’s 218th birthday!

July 1 was also the 70th birthday
of that dedicated community worker
and Canada’s best-known baseball
scout, Don Shwery. who had just
celebrated his 50th wedding anniver-
sary to his lovely wife Virginia a
couple of weeks earlier ... And kudos
to Nancy Stibberd and her Capilano
Suspension Bridge in raising $6,500
for Ronald McDonald House during,
their special 1889 Days a couple of
weeks back ... Cheers!
