Council debates SIM purchase of Argyle Ave. site Present owner will rent property WEST VANCOUVER District Councii will be ad- ding yet another piece of property to its string of lots along the Argyle Avenue waterfront. By Maureen Curtis Contributing Writer The propos :d price for the 1576 Argyle Ave. home is $1 million. Couacil finally agreed, Nov. 23, to make the purchase of the $1 million home at 1576 Argyle, but only after a council debate, the previous week, when Coun. Andy Danyliu expressed his concerns about the future use of the prop- erty. Danyliu said he did not want to see the house turned into another facility for local arts groups. **That’s not what the taxpayers had in mind when they gave us the mandate to purchase those properties,”’ said Danyiiu. West Vancouver has been ac- quiring waterfront properties be- tween Dundarave and Ambleside for use as seawalk and park for the public. Some of the houses were torn down and the land developed as park, A few houses were preserved for their esthetic values sid their usefulness as facilities for arts and theatre groups until a permanent arts centre is constructed. **We are in need of cultural fa- cilities, and we are in a reces- sion,’’ said Coun. Diana Hutchin- son. Coun, Danyiiu offered a motion that would indicate council’s in- tention of using the 1576 Argyle property to extend John Lawson Park and playground, ‘for the use of all citizens in West. Van- couver,”’ Danyliu said that buying the house for $1 million and then “handing it over’? as a clubhouse for a group would be ‘fiscal ir- responsibility.’’ Although Coun. Rod Day seconded Danyliu’s motion, it failed for lack of sufficient sup- port. “It’s premature to say what the use of that house should be 10 years down the 7oad,"’ said Coun. Pat Boname. She noted that the current owners of the house have an agreement for lifetime tenancy in it. Because the owners will become renters, the actual price of the Group needs clothing for new refugees MOSAIC, A non-profit agency thai helps refugees, is asking for the public’s help in donating unwanted clothes. Helena Konasewich, a MOSAIC volunteer and North . Shore resident, is collecting old ° clothes for refugees, Children's jackets and men's clothes are especially needed. Donations can be dropped off at Envirochem Services, 310 Estst Esplanade Ave., North Van. Donations can also be dropped off at MOSIAC, 1720 Grant St., Vancouver or by calling Konasewich at 921-8924, WEST VANCOUVER DISTRICT COUNCIL Property will be reduced to $820,000. “T have always -been a parks person, but If do not feel the Necessity to state exactly what ‘park purpose’ means and tie the future council’s hands,’ said Coun. Hutchinson. Coun. Ron Wood said quali- fying the use of the property now would be ‘‘inappropriate.”’ FOUNTAINVEW, Reg. 1.19 Ib. 69 ORGANIC | BANANAS MASSAGE 125 mi. * VEGETABLE | GLYCERINE sO4PS ¥ 120g. 3a + ABRACADABRA ae ¢ BATH SALT 282.
