sea, the crew of Passing -

Cloud, including West Van-
couver Mayor Mark Sager,
finally got to see sunshine
late last week during the
Victoria to Maui Interna-
tional Yacht Race.

Although the sunshine indicated
things may be improving, the race
has not been easy.

“The best way to describe this
so far is to say that steering a
50-ton schooner down a 10-foot
ocean swell at four in the morning
in 25 knots of wind with ro
visibility. is a new experience,”
said Sager last Friday from the
vessel. ° : .

crew reminded Sager about their
first conflict which had just oc-
curred when half the nine-member

‘crew had eaten some of the ice

cream without asking the other
half.

‘‘These are major issues when
you are half-way across the
ocean,”’ said Sager.

At the time of Sager’s report,
they were experiencing swells of
five to six feet, a 20-knot wind,
but no cross-chops (waves hitting
each other which made for ‘‘a
very trying ride at the beginn-
ing’’).

Passing Cloud’s mended main

sail that ripped 15 feet in heavy
winds early in the race is holding
up well, said Sager.

sponsor and will feature one more
report from the ship this week be-
fore the vessel’s anticipated arrival
in Maui early next week.

Among the 29 entries in the
gruelling race which covers 2,310
nautical miles are West Vancouver
Yacht Club’s General Hospital
and Hone Koa.

Participants left Victoria July 4
for Maui. Two vessels have had to
drop out of the race because of
bent or broken rudders.
