Carrying Jeep into the 90s IT’S A long road from a strictly utilitarian vehicle designed to carry military personnel and armament to an all-purpose sport utility equaily at home on the boulevard or rugged off- road terrain. But the journey reached its goal and a new chapter began in the history of the legendary Jeep when the all-new Jeep Grand Cherokee was driven into the North American International Auto Show in Detroit on Jan. 7, 1992. With Chrysler president Robert Lutz as driver, the Grand Chero- kee was literally piloted up the front steps of the show’s exhibit hall and through a breakaway glass window to make what was probably the grandest of all “grand entrances."” The route this prototype traversed began at the equally new Jefferson-North assembly plant where the Grand Cherokee is be- ing built and the very first one rolled off the assembly line on Jan. 14, 1992. It’s singularly appropriate that the Grand Cherokee should debut at the close of Jeep’s 50th year. With more passenger room, more cargo space and advanced techno- logicai features, Grand Cherokee is well equipped to carry the Jeep banner into the '90s decade. Standard four-wheel anti-lock brakes and driver’s-side air bag are proof of the Chrysler com- mitmem to safety. Ecologically friendly non-freon air condition- ing refrigerant, non-asbestos brake linings and recycle-iden- tified plastic parts are indicative of the Chrysler commitment to environmental responsibility. Initially available in three 4x4 price classes: Base, Laredo and Limited, the Grand Cherokee will be expanded as 1992 unfolds. Grand Cherokee comes from a distinguished line of forebears. The name ‘‘Jeep,”’ itself, is one of the most widely known and respected in all automotive histo- ry. A significant tribute to its ap- peal is that in August 1945, when the first civilian Jeep CJ, the CJ2A was introduced, there was scarcely any change in its appear- ance from the original military vehicle. Once off and running the Jeep scored ever-new high marks in design and usefulness and public acceptance. In the ’50s, a period of gradual evolution, two of the industry’s most unique vehicles were iniraduced — a two-wheel- drive dispatcher surrey and the 1956 Forward Control series trucks. This evolution climaxed in the 1960s when Jeep created the first true market for sport utility vehi- cles, and was marked by the in- troduction of the Grand Wagoneer in 1963. It has been the flagship of the Jeep brand since that time. When the Grand Wagoneer was discontinued at the end of the 1991 model year, its 29 years of life had set a record in the domestic market. By the end of the decade, production of Jeep vehicles was up to 600 per day. These were the years when the Renegade became a regular pro- duction model while the Com- mando name and line were discontinued to make way for the entry of the Cherokee name. As Jeep vehicles entered the 1980s they were poised to remain as the most complete and diverse group of vehicles available in the 4WD market. The most successful and most profitable Jeep in history — the XJ — was introduced in the fall of 1983. It was the compact sport utility available in four doors and two 4WD systems: shift-on-the- fly Commando-Trac and Selec Trac.
