I am 25 years old and my wife is 23. We own our townhouse joint- ly. If one of us dies wouldn’t the other inherit the house automatically? We don’t have any savings or other assets. Of course if we had children I can see it would be different. Answer: You are quite right in thinking that your wife would in- herit the house if you died first, but consider this: if you and your wife were both killed in the same automobile accident and neither of you had left a will, the law would assume that whichever of you was the elder would have died first and the property would pass to the younger. The property of the younger one, who also died in the car acci- dent and who also had no will, would be inherited by that person’s next of kin. Therefore, if you and your wife perish at the same time the whole property would go to her family. Most young ‘couples would rather take the precaution of mak- ing a will. A simple will is not a very expensive procedure. Although you could, quite legal- ly, prepare your own will, it is most highly recommended that, when property is involved, you consult a notary public or a lawyer.
