between the layers of glazing, it is

units feature three layers of Low-E
coated glazing and gas fill. Some
manufacturers offer nonmetallic
spacers, which reduce heat loss and
the potential for perimeter con-
densation.

The third important component
of a window is the frame. From an
energy standpoint, a solid wood
frame isa good choice. You can
purchase these clad with an exteri-
or aluminum. or vinyl covering,
which eliminates the need for exte-
rior painting.

Aluminum frames are durable
but must be equipped with well-
designed thermal breaks to prevent
condensation and frost from form-
ing on the frame. Another option
is wood-reinforced vinyl frames,
which provide good insulation and
