IT’S A hot summer's evening with
no trace of a breeze to dispel the
dust that hangs over the race track.
Suddenly, out of the haze that
coats the turn at the top of the
final straightaway, two brightly
colored racing cars hurtle towards
the checkered flag at speeds in ex-
cess of 15 miles an hour.

Brewery sponsored Indy. racing
it is not, but then all that’s needed
for radio-controlled racing cars is a
dirt lot and a bench to stand on if
you are six years old — not half
the downtown core.

The winner quickly rushes over
to his car and scoops it up. A knot
of admirers cluster for a moment
until preparations for the next race
create a new and more urgent ex-
citement. Fame is fleeting.

Narrowly beaten, the former
champion shakes hands with his
delighted 12-year-old opponent
and son, while inv'ardly wondering
how to casually introduce the
touchy topic of financing a major
design upgrade of his outdated
speedster when his wife returns
from the mall in their Pinto.

The models are not cheap, typi-
cally ranging in price from $150 to
$600. Unlike radio controlled
model airplanes, their noise is not
considered environmentally
polluting.

Western Canada Radio Control
Racing Cars (WCRCRC), a regis-
tered non-profit society, has run
weekly races for the past two years
on a dirt track north of the Cen-
tennial Theatre parking lot. In that
time their membership has grown
to 75 full-time and 25 associate
members ranging in age from 6 to
50 vears old.

mance has been improved with the
addition of ventilated front brake

formance has been improved by
the adoption of A.D.D. or
Automatic Disconnecting Dif-
ferential, available as an option on
four-cylinder 4WD models and
standard on ali V6 4Runners.
A.D.D. disconnects the front dif-
ferential when two-wheel drive
mode is selected. A.D.D. elizai-
nates the inconvenience of man-
ually locking front hubs with the
added benefits of reduced vibra-
tion, noise, power loss and fuel
consumption.

4Runner retains two proven
power units: a 150 horsepower
three-litre V6 and a 116 horse-
power 2.4 litre four-cylinder. Both
units are fitted with multi-port
electronic fuel injection.

Both engines may be fitted with
either a five-speed manual over-

drive or a four-speed automatic

overdrive transmission with lockup
torque converter. Regardless of
power unit or transmission, the

towing capacity for all 1990 ©

A new 1990 option is an electric
power moonroof with sliding sun-
shade featuring a 52 per cent in-
crease in opening as compared to
the pop-up style moonroof avail-
able on previous 4Runner models.

its introduction in 1984. The new
1990 model has the potential to
dominate that market segment,”’

Construction at the Lonsdale in-
terchange with the Upper Levels
Highway threatened continued
operation of the club this summer
but the District of North Van-
couver has offered temporary use
of a lot at the east end of 14th
Street adjacent to Kiwanis Park.

Staff had suggested a fee of $40
per month be levied, but council,
in response to a motion proposed
by Ald. Bill Rodgers, reduced the
amount to a yearly fee of $50. The
licence to occupy is conditional on
WCRCRC restoring the surface of
the land on termination of the
licence.

As dusk quietly turns to dark the
crowd thins, leaving just two
shadowy enthusiasts. Fifteen in-
ches and 30 years separate them,
ut for now the temporary tragedy
of flat batteries binds them more
closely than blood.
