books Book gives fascinating look at early Deep Cove WELL HERE’S an interesting assortment: history, the en- vironment, art and’a guide to fun along the Pacific coast. A rather bizarre conglomeration I'll grant you, but, at the very dustry. M’Gonigle and Wickwire have managed to pack Stein with refer- ences to the Stein Valley's climate, PL ME See oe led ale - 27 - Wednesday, April 26, 1989 - North Shore News least, an intriguing one. First off, iet’s have a look ata fascinating piece of local history with Echoes Across The Inlet, a chronicle of the Deep Cove area published by the Deep Cove and Area Heritage Association. This collaborative effort featuring the talents of the North Shore’s Dawn Sparks, Martha Border and Damien Inwood is a large-format (8%"’x11" or roughly 22 cm x 28 cm for metric converts) softcover retrospective of the Deep Cove area. It’s a pretty handsome piece of work with a generous component of archival photographs depicting a Deep Cove raost of us would be hard pressed to recognize today. Through anecdotes, personal remembrances, and 106 black and white photographs and maps, the authors have done a fine job of turning the history of a relatively restricted geographic area into an engaging story. Distribution of Echoes Across The Inlet is limited, but copies, at $19.95 each, can be had at the following locations: Block Bros. offices, 3709 Delbrook; the Seycove Library, 1204 Caledonia; Pavlik Travel, 2221 Panorama Drive; and Ron Andrews Pool on Mount Seymour Parkway. MIKE STEEL ‘pook reviewer eee One of the few B.C. Book Prize nominees we haven’t examined in this column so far is Stein — The Way Of The River (Talon Books; 189 op.; $39.95 in hardcover). So let's correct that nasty oversight right now. Authors Michael M’Gonigle and Wendy Wickwire richly deserve the acclaim they're now receiving for what has to be one of the best quality books published in B.C. in the past year. A book of great beauty with a strong environmental theme, Stein offers a definitive overview of a magnificent ecological region that remains at the centre of a fre- quently bitter battle between con- servationists and the forest in- terrain, importance to native peo- ples and indeed just about everything a reader might want to know in the way of gathering background material on the origins of the logging conflict. The amazing thing is that they’ve been - able to accomplish this without detracting from the book’s broader appeal as a souvenir or general in- terest title. Stein — The Way Of The River is selling briskly in stores across the Lower Mainland thanks to two recent develcpments: the book’s nomination for the prestigious Duthie Booksellers’ Prize, and the announcement by forest giant Fletcher Challenge that pre-logging activities have been halted for at least the next year. As a result, some local bookstores report their stocks of Stein dwindling fast.... JHE SPORTS NETWORK Sizzling Competition and Spectacular Feats!
