Time t Fron: page 19 fails to attract birds; instead the tree attracts numerous insect pests. Pro othinking ef replacing the plum with, perhaps. a Korean mountain ash GSoerbus alnifolia} which produces many berries well into winter and has few pest pro- blems. Along with my usual fall gardening chotes (including the replanting of the tulip bulbs | dug up in June, giving the bulb beds a healthy dose of bonemeal, etc.), Vi soon be planting some shrubs I've been nursing along for some time. Last winter f collected a variety of cuttings from shrubs that pro- side vood food or cover for wildlife. 1 kept the cuttings refrigerated in damp peat moss un- ti April when 1 put them out in a planting bed. A couple of months ago | transplanted them (to individual containers ~- from which they’ll go into the ground soon. I'll group them by threes and fives; each group will eventually occupy about 60 to 100 square feet, replacing much of what is now lawn, These shrubs include: © Buttonbush (Cephalanthus oc- cidentalis), a good, dense wetland shrub that aiso grows well in yards and provides food and nesting cover for birds. Its fragrant flowers attract butterflies and hummingbirds. * American elderberry — (Sam- bucus canadensis), which has clusters of large white flowers in May and June, and black berries in July and August. The berries ap- peal to birds as well as to those of us who like vood = pies and elderberry wine. The fall foliage is attractive, *Silky dogwood (Cornus amomum), a wood habitat shrub which has dense reddish or purple iwigs good for nesting. Its May/ June creamy-white flowers often autract the spring azure butterflies, and its blue berries attract birds from September through November. fts lovely foliage is scarlet. How's your yard doing — as habitat for both you and your think of fall planting wildlife? Right now is a vood tine to take stock. |LSILK_PLANTS }} 5 TE Hawaiin Fig Trees | 904 W. 46th St., NV 980-1142 across trom Gods Gyn Erie to new bigger premises Showroom & Warehouse under one roof.
