8 ~ Sunday, March 16, 1986 - North Shore News ‘ Doug Collins ¢ get this straight e “ee THERE'S ALWAYS some idiocy we don't know about, and this one will make the boys at the old watering hole go snap, crackle and pop. Keep the ambulances handy. Were you aware that under the War Veterans Allowance Act, im- migrants who fought in any Ailied army during the first or second world wars can collect a Canadian service pension? Probably not, because although | am an Inspee- tor Javert in such matters, | have only just found out about it myself. To qualify, they must have been here 10 years and their income must be below the poverty level, which varies from about $10,000 for a single person to $13,500 for a married one. The veterans’ allowance they can then collect on top of that is $681.69 a month for singles to $1,035.03 for the marrieds. They gon’t even have to be citizens, and once they've qualified they can bog off back to the old country and take their pensions with them, thank you very much. In India, such money would be riches, and even in the U.S. or the U.K. it would not be sneezed at. Canada is the only country in the world that pays foreign veterans, and a senior official of the Department of Veterans Af- fairs says that other countries think we're crazy. We do it because there is no limit to the lengths our disgusting politicians will go to get a vole. (in this case, the regulation was introduced by the Liberals.) * Worse looms. Yokel Vainberg, a Jewish im- Migrant from the U.S.S.R. now living in Toronto, has had the cheek, gall and chutzpa to go to court and claim ander the bioody Charter of Rights that the 10-year qualifying period is discriminatory and therefore illegal. If he wins all newly-arrived former members of the Russian armed forces who were in the war will get a pension as soon as they get off the plane. The same will apply to those from every other ‘allied’ coun- try, be it Botswana, Bangladesh, Uganda or Jamaica. (No need to worry too much about the Brits because they can’t get in these days unless they're wearing a turban.) The details of the Vainberg case are laid out in a recent issue of the Canadian Jewish News. And the DVA confirmed them for me. Vainberg heads a 120-strong group, 99 per cent of whose members are Jews, which fact I mention because if Ottawa had its way every Jew in Russia would ga'n immediate admittance to Canada. Which would fatten the bill considerably. The man is quoted as saying: “We came to Canada and Seft evervihing we had." So what? Was he doing us a favor? A further Vainberg wisdom is that in fighting for the U.S.S.R. he was also fighting for Canada. Fighting for Canada my ass. The Soviet Army was fighting for its own neck and the neck of Un- cle Joc. And Vainberg, in par- ticular, was fighting for Ais neck. If Gorbachev were to let them out, every living Russian vet and possibly a few dead ones too would flock over here to collect this largesse. Good news is good news, man, and we're big on “‘refugees."" The stupid Charter should be dumped, the rules should be changed so that pensions are restricted to Canadians who fought in the Canadian armed ser- vices, and this country should grow some brains. None of these things will happen, though, because we are Wimpland and ever shall be. Cut yourself off a slice, is our message to the world. This case is much more impor- tant than the money that Vainberg & Co. are after. If he wins, it will open the door to every immigrant aged 65 or over becoming im- mediately eligible for a full old- age pension. Plus any other benefits that now have a 10-year residency requirement. J I hope it happens. It might hasten the revolution.
