Balance your load. When loading your boat with pas- sengers and gear, spread weight evenly throughout your boat. This will enable your boat to get on plane quickly and reach the desired speed without ‘‘plowing”’ or “porpoising.’? And you will save fuel Keep an eye on the weather. Avoid false starts if prevailing air and sea condi- tions are questionable. Brisk winds and heavy chop siphon the fuel tanks. Take a shorter cruise. You don’t have to travel a hun- dred miles to enjoy the water. Visit those spots closer to home. The gas you save by taking a_ shorter cruise will enable you to spend more time on fun ac- tivities. Avoid excessive idling. Whenever you have to stop, fuel. Keep the propeller blades clean and in good condition. Tune-up your engine. Proper ignition timing and clean spark plugs assure ex- tra mileage. Inspect the car- buretor for praper float level, correct jetting and smooth choke operation. Trailer check. If you boat in coastal tidal areas, keep a tide schedule handy. Boating against the tide is hike running against the wind — it takes more effort. Make the tides work to your advantage. Clean your hull. A clean hull means reduced under- water drag. In some areas, it is advisable to clean the hull of your boat several times a season to remove algae and other underwater sludge.
