7 - Friday, May 10, 1985 - North Shore News Challengin the courts Dear Editor, Should Canadians be fore- ed by law to support a political party or cause? The National Citizens’ Coalition doesn’t think so and is therefore backing a constitutional court challenge by Merv Lavigne to two aspects of labour law. Mr. Lavigne is a dedicated professional engincer and teacher at the Haileybury Schoo! of Mines in Ontario. He is forced to support, through union dues which he is compelled to pay, political parties and causes with which he strongly disagrees. Mr. Lavigne simply doesn’t think he should have to support, through his dues: the NDP; the extremist leader of the British mineworkers, Arthur Scargill; disarma- ment; etc. He believes that his right to freedom of expression is be- ing violated and is seeking to guarantee that compuisory union dues may only be used for collective bargaining ‘purposes. f Last fall he discovered that “he could have been fined $500 per day by the Ontario _ government for being paid to , . a Go with Sunday on a ‘shopping wy |_ a, majority Dear Editor, Your paper does a lot to ‘promote Sunday Shopping - on the North Shore and I _ have to question its motives. Of course the average person who doesn’t work in a store wants the convenience of seven days a week shopping, but if asked they’d probably go for a 24 hour/day service too! A recent poll taken of the Lynn Valley Centre: store holders showed that those in favour of Sunday Shopping - were. the minority, yet the Mall is still operating its seven day week. 1 believe in the main the only individuals to financial- ly benefit from Sunday shop- ping ‘are the Mall owners whose overheads change very - little regardless of how Jong or late they stay open. If we truly do live in a democracy why don’t we go by what the majority of storeholders seem to want as they’re the ones who are in- .., convenienced, or simply let -. them make their own. deci- ~’ sions? After all, ] don’t know of a single bank, trust com- pany or liquor store that | can shop at on a Sunday anywhere on the North Shore, so why should the retailer have to open his doors if he doesn’t want to? Yours Faithfully, Name withheld by request KEEP CAN4D4A teach his students during a strike. He and seven of his colleagues therefore decided to teach during the last week of the strike at no pay. the law, the Colleges Col- lective Bargaining Act, is the only one of its kind in the province. This is the second aspect of his challenge. He believes that he should be iveated equally wnder the law, as guaranteed in the Charter of Rights and Freedoms, and is seeking to have this jaw overturned, We urge those of your readers whose rights have been similarly violated to protest to their provincial end federal representatives and civil liberties organizations. The price of liberty ts cter- nal vigilance by citizens — and their involvement. Sincerely, Colin M.
