who arranged this
weekend’s disasters in
Lions Bay it meant
spending at least one
sleepless night.

But as a result of their
lack of sleep, the emergency
service people in the tiny
community have discovered
enough of their weaknesses
to feel more confident in
dealing with real disasters.

The event was the first
large-scale, multi-force
disaster exercise for the
community, with a simulated
creek wash-out involving
injuries and perilous rope-
bridge rescues Friday at
midnight and a faked car-
train collision and a case of
some missing people under
the Saturday afternoon sun.

Rosalind MacPhee, a
member of the Lions Bay
Search and Rescue team,
says the exercise enabled the
groups involved — search
and rescue, the Emergency
Health Service (ambulance
service) and the Lions Bay
Fire Department — to
pin-point a number of
weaknesses and to actually
try out emergency plans that
