A8 - Sunday, February 28, 1982 - North Shore News Ee mailbox Dear Editor: Ms. Harris seems to have missed the point I was trying to make in my letter on rental rates: that high in- terest rates are staggering homeowners and small investors in rental = ac- commodation, and that so far, most renters have been insulated from the impact of Officia Dear Editor: With regard to an item from North Van District reported Feb. 10, I wish to add my written complaint to that of Mr. W.S. Elphin- stone. We, as residents on Premier Street, have every right to complain about the incessant truck travel all day long to the dump, starting as early as 8 a.m. at times. High-handed and _in- sensitive to the rights of residents the council is, and remains so, even though these incredible interest rates. For instance, a person purchasing a two-bedroom condominum in Lower Lonsdale would need a substantial down payment. Carrying a mortgage on the balance at 18%. combined with taxes and maintenance fees, would make his monthly cost well over $1100 per month, compared to his neighbour who is now renting an identical unit for $550. I am NOT suggesting that rentals rates should double. Heaven forbid. I am suggesting that interest rates MUST come down to avoid social upheaval in this country. Owners are biting the bullet now, but they have over for and that 1s little money left anything else, Staring to depress many other sectors of the economy. Small investors like myself are “hanging tough” for now, waiting for signals on interest rates before deciding what to do with investments. And believe me, Ms. Haris, we are subsidizing our in- Renters ‘insulated’ from high interest rates vestments from other come, while waiting happier times. Renters, instead of talking about rent strikes, which will hurt themselves, should be petitioning Ottawa about interest rates, which are threatening to tear apart the fabric of this country. I regret that Ms. Harris resorted to wrong assump- in- for ‘hypocrisy’ about Premier St. complaints about the dump range far beyond the local sphere. Incredible is the fact that a complaint can be rejected, but once one lives here for a while, it is clearly evident that Premier St. is simply an annex or access road to the dump. Residents come second. I often have to close windows, even on a hot day, when trying to get some written work done, the sound of traffic is so intense. Storm windows would be good to have, but I doubt if District would want to pay for their installation. More residents would complam, if they had to be home during the day, as the only ume it is fairly quiet here is at night and on Sundays. ] parked my car once on the road, and found it covered with dust after a few hours, so much dirt is carted in by the garbage and other trucks. The District road sweeper is the noisiest vehicle of all, but 1 suppose it is necessary, under these dire conditions. Premier was once a quiet country road leading to an_ enchanted woods-and-creek playgrou- nd but this was not meant to last. 1 wonder how many of the District aldermen live on this dismal street so that they can speak with authority on its condition! Official hypocrisy is intolerable with regard to this sad situation, we need some honest effort to remedy matters so that we Nukes make problems disappear! Dear Editor: Last summer I was part of a group of concerned in- dividuals seeking support from the three North Shore municipal councils for a nuclear disarmament petition. This petition is being circulated world wide and is to be presented to the United Nations Special Session on Disarmament in 1982. The idea was to start the campaign at local government level, and lobby upwards from there. Only the City of North Vancouver heard the presentation, but we were Car or Truck Deductible STARTING AT We'll Pick Up Your Problem eWe ll Handle Your ICBC Forms eWe'll Only Charge You The unable to get council's approval, being dismissed as a group of misinformed people. One alderman even Suggested that we were placing Canada’s safety at risk because our plea for disarmament was directed at the United States only, which we made clear was not the case. With United Nations Nuclear Disarmament Weck now behind us. 1 am won- dering if our “well informed” councillors are aware of what has been going on in Western Europe, where tens of thousands of these native. There is a feeling around these days that politicians are probably our least in- formed people. It seems that we are being counselled by those who do not want disarmament or who feel that the problem is too large for their consideration. Are we so backward that we cannot understand what 1s going on? Or, since we have never expenenced war first hand, are we just smug? However, we may be assured of one thing, these 980-7075 probiems like all others, will! disappear when missiles start to fall. Richard C.
