met Terry Jacks and they
teamed up,calling themselves
The Poppy Family, teaming
up maritally as well. -

As the Poppy Family, they
**stuck to that very sad
appeal-to-people’s-emotions

After a ‘couple -of other

releases, “‘Which way you
goin’ Billie?”sold a million
copies and earned them a
gold record.

your concert tickets, you’re
nothing,’’ Susan says.

NEEDS APPRECIATION

The fact that I get money
from my singing is nice, but
more than that
people are giving me their
approval.

don’t get that approval it

had to get that other part of
me out. I wanted to explore
what was inside of me.””

When she first started to

sing, her greatest influences

musically. were Dusty Spring-
field and Dionne Warwick;
more recently she’s been
influenced by the Eagles,
Bonnie Rait, and Kiki Dee.

Susan Jack’s latest records
include ‘Dirty Blues’ and‘Mr.
Vincent’s Dancing Class’,
both of them departures from
the kinds of songs she did
with the Poppy Family. She
characterizes them as more
*‘raunchy’’ and had a great
time recording them.

Professionally, Susan’s
been held up the last couple
of years over a -contract’~”
dispute, which tied her up.
with “‘money, _ record
contracts, everything. I had
to sit it out and wait until -it
was over.”

With the judgment in. her
favour, she says she can now
concentrate on what she
really wants to do.

“Il learned a lot in the
process,’’ she says. “‘There
isn’t that much room for
people to be trustirig in this
business. It took me a long
time to learn that."’
