Springer Spaniels I
have seen im a long
time. She was liver and
_ white in color and a
pleasure: to all who
came m contact with

her. We had given fier |

all. her’. vaccinations,
spayed her and fixed up
a broken leg when she
was -five months old.
Now she was obviously
in trouble.

She could hardly open her
eyes which looked very

inflamed and there was a
yellow discharge from the
inner corner on both sides.

“T've heard of Spaniel
eyes,” said Jim, “but I hoped
we'd be lucky enough to
never have ’em in our Jeff”.

I examined eyes
closely, first using the
normal light above the
examination table and then I
got an opthalmascope and
with the room darkened
made a more particular
examination of the cornea or
transparent front of the eye
and the many stuctures
behind it.

There was no major
damage to either eyeball but
the membranes around them
were reddened with
distorted blood vessels, the
eyelids were swollen and a
pus-like disharge was being
formed continuously and

“We are going to have to

do some surgery here,” I told
Jim, “in order to evert the
eyelids a little bit, but I'm
going to treat both eyes with
antibiotics and cortisone for
a few days to get most of the

_infection and inflamiation
cleared up. We'll schedule
surgery for ‘Thursday
morning.

This procedure comes
under the heading of
cosmetic surgery which is
changing the skin by cutting
or removal of a portion of it
and resuturing to alter the Hie
or appearance of the part.

In humans it has been
called ‘plastic surgery’ and
great progress has been
made in this technique so
that chins can be built up,
wrinkles removed,
