McInnes has been conducting workshops and courses on coping in a stepfamily since 1982, She has taught throughout the Lower Mainiand and in Squamish and this year is bringing her expertise to the North Shore in the form of a course entitled StepFamilies: From Surviving to Thriving. Offered through the North Shore Family Services Society (NSFSS), the $30 course explores the special tasks of stepfamilies and works on solving common problems such as divided loyalties. ‘The bond between the parent and child and even parent and former spouse is often more secure than the bond between the parent and the current spouse. That creates insecurities that need to be dealt with,”? explains McInnes who is also part of a stepfamily. McInnes says it does take courage to come to workshops (of- fered on two Saturdays in October) like this but the reaction of the Bosom Buddies meet BOSOM BUDDIES, a support group for women who have breast cancer, resumes for the fail on Sept. 21. Featured at this meeting is plastic surgeon Dr. Robert Thompson, who will speak on Breast Reconstruction — is it for you? Women vary in their evaluation of the importance of the loss of a breast. Some find adjusting to a prosthesis difficult and inconve- nient while others dislike the idea of an external prosthesis. These and other personal reasons may affect whether or not a woman would want to consider plastic surgery. The meeting will be held on Wednesday, Sept. 2] at 7:30 p.m. at Delbrook Baptist Church, 515 West Kings Rd., North Vancouver. Registration is currently being accepted for enrolment in the pro- gram. Y-Care will run three mornings each week, Monday, Wednesday and Friday, starting at 6:45 a.m. and finishing by 8 a.m. The pro- gram is supervised by university- trained YMCA staff and by cor- onary care registered nurses.
