Council and staffare considering the provi- sional budget for 1998-2000. A final budget is expected to be adopted in May. Said Municipal Manager Gord Howie in his report to mayor and council, “Fhe 1998-2000 period promises to be a fiscally difticulr one, as municipalit wrestle with reduced provincial grants, high tions and diminishing resoure thanks to a reduction in surpluses available far current operating costs, a reduction in railway fax revenues and declining investment income due to reduced interest rates. Howie said: staff have reduced operating costs in 1998 by approximately $1.25 million. The recommended tax increase would pan our to an extra S30 on an average home assessed at $332,000. The 2.5% hike would be bumped up to 3.2% if council were to give the nod to all requests for additional fundin Howie reported that forecasts tor 1999 and 2000 show tax increases of 7% and 4%, respec- tively.
