New programs offer shorter, more intensive training. by Lisa Smedman Those already working is the software industry are typically young, in their 20s and 30s, For those who are older, and who are considering a career switch to this industry, the high cost of tuition and length of time required to get a university degree can be daunting. Many are turning instead to specialized schools that offer short, intensive training programs. One of the newest providers of an education in information technology is the Information Technology Institute (ITI), which opened in Vancouver earlier this year. ITI was founded in Halifax in 1984. It’s a private educational company that provides training in informa- tion technology to those who already have a university degree (for example, a BA, BSc, MA or MBA). Applicants are given a “logic test” (aptitude test) and successful candidates embark on an intensive nine- month course that can later be applied as half credit towards an MBA with a masters in IT (typically done through distance education) at Dalhousie University. Cost of the nine-month course is currently $22,600. In Vancouver, ITI currently has about 85 students enrolled in two classes.
