Let's take v weapons away from crimina

Dear Editor:

The columns by Dr. Michael Walker of
the Fraser Institute and Paul St. Pierre, both
of whom took sides with the pro-gun lobby,
have done nothing to assist the gun control
debate,

The shillowness and inaccuracies in St.
Pierre’s piece show his ignorance of the
complexities of the subject.

There is serious debate going between
moderate gun owners and those secking bet-

fer wun control and despite what the extrem-
ists inthe wun tobby say, there isa desire to
seek common ground,

The statistics provided by Professor
Gary Mauser on firearms use for self-pro-
tection was extrapolated from interview
sumpling of no more than 393 houscholds
across Canada,

Dr. Watker asserts that 79% of
Canadians agree that gun control laws affeet
only law-abiding citizens, however an
Angus Reid poll in September 1993 found

that 86% of Canadians support firearms reg-
istration and 84% support a ban on militiry
type weapons. Professor Mauser has elial-
tenged this claim, which was based on
1.200 interviews.

Your readers must judge the accuracy of
either figure for themselves, but it is fir to
say. however, hat Bill C17 passed in the
House of Commons and the Senate in 1990
because even the hawks in Parliament were
won over by overwhelming public support
for the Bill. MPs were deluged by letters

and at Jeast 200.000 posteards from ordi-
nary citizens.

It cannot be stressed strongly enough
that gun vontrol advocates do nat wish to
take away from law-abiding hunters and tar-
get shooters, but many gun extremists have
taken over the debate and we will ail suffer
if Justice Minister Allan Rock is swayed too
much by their arguments.
