It began in August 1993 when Alisa Japanese restaurant moved into the storefront occupied for so long by the Nairobi indo- African restaurant. Gen Sushi then set up shop in the upper teaches of North Vancouver City’s main drag. And the Japanese food wave continues to sweep the length of Lonsdale with the new Honjin Japanese restaurant in the former Saigon restaurant location (140 Lonsdale) in.Lower Lonsdale and a pair of new sushi bars in the suddenly sushi-saturated zone between 13th and 15th streets. Papa’s and Mama’s Japanese Kitchen at 1434 Lonsdale is a small Japanese eat-in-take-out cafe adjoined to Ripps Diner, the North Shore's legendary “Garden of Eatin’,” a fabled chop house of biblical low prices and short- order cookery. More interesting, however, is Da-Som. Sei Oh opened his 50-seat restaurant in early August in what was briefly Benito Gardens and before Benito, Tu Casa, which began with an snitial promise of interestin: Spanish tood but lost focus ane mean- dered into mediocre Mediterranean cuisine. Da-Som presents + good selection of Japanese ushis, sashimis, tempuras a; udons and adds to ita dozer Korean specialties. Sei Oh (seated) and chef Dongikil Cheong present a feast cf Japanese and Korean dishes at the new Da-Som restaurant on Lonsdale Avenue in North Van. have an audible Oriental swing — Bibim Bop, Japchae Bop, Bulgogi Combo — and a piquant delivery. Nakji ($13.50), for example, is spicy pan-fried octopus with assorted vegetables, anc Pa Jeon ($9.50) presents assorted pan- fried seafood accompanied with a special Korean veggie pancake. Our sampled Kal Bi Combo opened with a bow! of soul- warming Miso soup. The main dish included a small serving of excellent barbecued beet ribs accompanied by two varieties of bean sprouts. julienne carrots and rice. A side order of Korean kimchi ($1.50), a hot-bleoded Oriental version of sauerkraut, added fiery zest to the ribs. Da-Som’'s Japanese dishes are all well made, though nothing is outstanding. Its selection of Korean specialties, however, sets it apart from the rest of the sushi pack. Portions are small, but they are many and Da-Som’s serving, staff is uniformly gracious and attentive, So if you have yet to wade into Lonsdale’s Oriental food tlood, take an initial plunge at Da-Som.
