USPENDED ACROSS Robert Gardiner’s other- wise brick-solid set is a huge gilt picture frame. Itis such an obviously artifi- cial and romantic statement in what is otherwise an earthily ele- mental! design that it demands the very questions that awarcl- winning Quebec playwright Michel Marc Bouchard seeks to raise. - . The play opens as Bishop Bilodeau gropes his way into the gloom of an abandoned ware- house. . . Here he will soon view aban- donment of a different sort as he is confronted by Simon Doucet Martin Millerchip THEATRE REVIEW and forced to witness anew events from their adolescence of some 40 years-ago in the small resort town of Roherval. The frame borders a stage as Simon and other ex-cons act out seminal events that the one has spent his whole life forgetting and the other remembering. The frame also surrounds an early image of the martyrdom of St. Sebastian, reputedly shot to death by arrows in 288 AD. As taught by the school priest, Sebastian wants to die —~ betiev- ing sacrifice is a moment of ulti- mate love. This image continues to recur as a tragic series of events unfolds, culminating in two {almost three) deaths that are “nobly” self-chosen: “Our entire life is revealed in the courage and clarity of our acts.” Finally, and most importantly, the frame places the audience on both sides of the action. Like Bilodeau, we are passive watchers. The theatricality of the play-within-a-play device is fur- ther emphasized by lines like: “She's not crazy, she’s just play- ing a part.” But we are all players on the stage of life and it is not enough for playwright Bouchard to invite us into his romantic orgy of nobility and betrayal, courage and cowardice by creating recog- nizable archetypes. By creating a company of all- male convicts Bouchard has his audience watch adolescents See Morgan page 38 Grest Validation: _ SyP A NORTH VAN.
