The North Vancouver theatre is set to open its 1993-94 season late this month at the earliest, and some fear it will be one of its most, dismal seasons yet. Accusations are flying back and forth concerning the judgment of those. in charge, and many are poiniing fingers at the ship's cap- tain. Meanwhile, an all-out tug-of- war is 5rewing over who will run the venue. All the turmoil has Ied_ to disarray and neglect of the final product, say theatre insiders. “The theatre is totally stripped. Routine maintenance hasn’t been done in two years,’ said the theatre’s technical director, Egon Steinebach. “A lot of people | talk to just assume the theatre is closed,’’ said Richard Strachan, a former Pres- entation House board member. Long-time arts activist Ella Parkinson, one of Presentation House founders, remembers when the theatre was once a vibrant fa- cility. In the first six months after it opened in 1978, 11,000 people passed through its doors. ALL-SEASON TRACTION INVICTA GL FSS AUT SL mMYouR fa @LD TIRES uw. By Evelyn Jacob News Reporter So far, this season includes largely amateur productions in- terspersed with Vancouver Inter- national Writer's Festival events and an Equity Masterclass showcase series. It sounds good on paper, but there ave some gaping holes, says Strachan. Even Karen Love, who was named interim adminstrative director following the resignation of Brigitte O’Rooney last month, admitted to unhappiness with the gaps. “Moving from a_ production house to a rental facility is always a bit difficult and slow. But I do believe they (the holes) are soon to be filled,’’ said Love. After last year’s disastrous summer season in which the theatre incurred a sizeable deficit, saw the resignation of theatre director Michael Fera and the subsequent cancellation of its 1992-93 season, the Presentation House Board made public in the fall a five-year plan for the arts OUR POPULAR ALL SEASON ARRIVA PASS /BORYE SL 3 ALL- LIGHT TRUCK AND VANS WORKHORSE RADIAL ns. 60m | Get S60 10 S100 when you trade-in your set af 4 “sf set of Aquotteds, Ask x Aquatred!’s unique design ond warranty. Theatre groups were shocked to discover the plan provided no provisions for the theatre. Outraged by what they saw as the deliberate dumping of the theatre, a handful of theatre rep- resentatives banded together to save the venue and presented a petition containing 200 signatures opposing the board’s action to municipal councils. After several futile attempts that same group was invited to work with the board and an interim theatre advisory committee was struck this summer to map out a season and develop a long-term vision for the theatre. All seemed to be going well un- til the board let go the technical director without consulting the committee. (Steinebach has since been offered his job back.) One committee member resigned in protest and two others have temporarily stepped down. While Love pointed out the committee was never given the mandate to get involved in per- sonnel matters, those people are now wondering just how sincere the board was in seeking their counsel in the first place. “It’s a farce. An absolute farce.
