ECBC calendar focuses
on the fabulous fifties

FANS OF TV programs like
The Wonder Years, or those
of us who can remember
the days when gas was 50¢
a gallon — or, for that
matter, what a gallon was
will enjoy the 1993
Autoplan calendar, sodn to
appear in brokers’ offices
across B.C.

Naturally, the focus of ICBC’s
calendar is cars, and for [993 it’s
the fabulous cars of the Fifties.

In those days, North American
cars owned the road. Imports
were curiosities Volkswagen
beetle owners would ‘‘meep’’ at
each other when they passed.

The calendar features such
classics as the Ford Fairlane
“hardtop” convertibles. The or-
dinary-looking metal roof would
actually fold and power back into
the trunk. You didn’t have much
trunk space left on those days you
wanted to gc “‘topless.”’

convertible. This ‘‘baby-bird’’
packed a 312 cubic-inch
“Thunder Special’? V-8 and was
all yours for just $3,072 US.

Cadillac hardtop coupe, a huge
1951 Buick Special convertible,
compiete with the famous
Dynaflow automatic transmission,
and a 1950 Chevrolet Fleetside
Deluxe.

The classic Chevy featured a
push-button radio, a dash clock,
the split windshield, a spotlight
just outside the driver's ‘‘no-
draft?’ and one of those visors
that made it tough to see the
whole screen at the drive-in.

And we have fins!

Chrysler’s 1956 Plymouth
Belvedere sports sedan sported
one of the all-time great profiles.
In those pre-eight-track-tape
days, this car had a compact re-
cord player under the dash.
