8 — Wednesday, August 19, 1992 ~- North Shore News MAILBOX Wright is looking through the wrong end of the telescope | Dear Editor: Noel Wright’s column of Aug. 7 (‘NAFTA is the wrong medi- cine again, Mike!’’) is the typical uninformed. opinion that appreci- ates a better audience than it deserves. { don’t -ecall anyone else think- ing that Wilson ‘believes that free trade is the answer to all our eco- nomic woes." And of course, we expect the agreement to hit some major snags. Except for the contentious, - difficult 15% of our trade with the U.S., Canada has - enjoyed mainly open trade anyway. The NAFTA agreement can’t be ratified by the U.S. until one year after the United States presidential “ election in November. ' The real point of the NAFTA agreement is that the world is ‘aligning itself into trading areas, of which there are only four. Unless Canada is part of the North American alliance, we will ~. be left outside looking in. Noel Wright is looking through the wrong end of the telescope; it is not so much a matter of why ~ we should be part of NAFTA (we asked over 100% per year to a figure of tens. Mexico is privatizing and encouraging foreign investment for the first time — a policy in complete contrast to the protec- tionist policy Wright espouses for Canada. j Wake up, Noel Wright; the world is changing and it’s time you gave NAFTA some positive, serious, deeper considerations. It's called international competitive advantage in which Canada can and has successfully participated. As respon- sible adults, we should take action to safeguard the lives of our young people and the lives of those who risk theirs in rescue ef- ‘ forts. Please close the danger areas.
