28 — Friday, July 10, 1992 - North Shore News Chrysler announces plans for production of propane-powered vehicle in Canada CHRYSLER CANADA Ltd. and the Propane Gas Association of Canada (PGAC) have recently sign- ed an agreement that is the first step to having Chrysler engineer, manufacture, ‘market and warranty a propane-powered vehicle. The objective of this and subsequent: agreements is to pro- duce an advanced alternate-fuell- "ed vehicle offering consumers ‘State-of-the-art engine and emis- ‘sions control technology designed specifically for prepane. Goals to be met include: -@ Offering vehicle functions and performance equal to, or better than, gasoline-powered equivalent vehicles. @ Full compliance with all safety. standards, corrosion guidelines, noise standards and so on. ° @ Fuel economy equal to or bet- ter than gasoline, based on BTU (British Thermal Unit) equivalen- cy. . | @. Certified “emissions perfor- .Mance better than its gasoline equivalent. -@ Performance optimized for the Canadian climate. . @ Reliability and durability based on thorough laboratory and road “ testing. @ A seven-year 115, ooa- kilometre warranty. .-° |@ And: an aggressive, effective ” ‘marketiag program designed to ‘make Canadians aware of the! ad- vantages inherent in -pro- *pane-fuelled vehicles both. eco- : nomically and environmentally. This first agreement calls for Chrysler to develop a ‘‘concept” vehicle to assess auto propane technology, including both gaseous fuel injection (GFI) and quid fuel injection (LFI). The resulting concept vehicle will pro- vide the data necessary for the next stages of the project, and ultimately, production of either a light truck or van/wagon to be available for sale in Chrysler showrooms across Canada in January, 1995 Funding of the overall project comes from the federal and On- tario governments, Chrysler Canada Ltd. and the Canadian propane industry -through the Propane Gas" Association .of Canada. In announcing this agreement, Bill Kurtze, managing director.‘of the PGAC, said: ‘‘We are very excited about this project, as we believe it will allow us to take the next critical step in the ongoing growth and development of auto propane in Canada.”’ **Ours is not an ‘‘experimental’’ fuel,’’ said Kurtze. established infrastructure _con- sisting of more than 5,000 pro- pane-refuelling outlets across Canada, and there are already some 140,000 propane-powered vehicles operating on Canadian. roads, -In fact, we are Canada’s third largest-selling tzansportation fuel. Combined with _ its butter-smooth five-speed manual transmission, light, accu- rate. steering; and’ extremely good brakes, the Integra is an enjoyable car to drive. : ~ One complaint, though. Anti- lock brakes are available only on the GS and GS-R models. Anti- lock brakes, like airbags, are fast -., becoming standard equipment on many cars ard should be available on the Integra, at least as an op- tion. . The available four- speed automatic transmission does a pretty good job of rerouting the power of the small, rev-happy engine to the front axle, but the transmission’s leisurely nature means that’ acceleration is some- what slower than with the man- ual-transmission-equipped car. With so much window glass, the Integra’s interior is quite bright and airy. [t also gets pretty hot inside when you leave the car Z 3 PARTICIPACTION. we parked in direct sunlight for too long. The dashboard-is made of shiny, textured plastic with a rais- ed hood, which shades the easy- - to-read, round instruments. The Integra’s slim control stalks for lights: and wipers are elegant and functional, and the centre- mounted stereo and ventilation controls are also easy to use. However, some buttons, such as the rear defroster, are awkwardly positioned behind the steering wheel. For the import buyer who wants a car that is economical, sporty, reliable, and comes with an ex- cellent warranty, the Integra fits the bill nicely. The RS coupe is the best buy, in my opinion. “We have an - Camaro clu celebrates anniversary with show THE VANCOUVER Camaro Club of Vancouver is celebrating its 10th anniversary by hosting the Third Annual Northwest Camaro Nationals, Camaro enthusiasts are invited to join the club on Sunday, Ju- ly 12 at Waterfront Park to commemorate the 25th birth- day of the Chevrolet Camaro.
