Lifejackets can save lives

Waterskiing tips

WATERSKIING is a_ very
physically demanding sport.

You can have a more plea-
surable time this summer if you
follow these tips:

1. Give your partner equal
time on the skis.

2. Make sure the boat opera-
tor is an experienced driver and
has knowledge of pulling
skiers.

3.There should be an
observer or the boat should be
equipped with a rear view mir-

ror. The skier should be
observed at all times.

caused by accidental falls into the
water, from a boat, wharf or
shore.

Choose a good trailer

MOST BOATS travel more miles
on the highway than they do on
water. ; :

That fact underscores the value
of owning a good boat trailer that
is adequately maintained. Inspec-
ting and maintaining wheel bear-
ings is the key to having a safe
boat trailer that performs well.

Here’s how to clean and pack
trailer wheel bearings.

Jack up the trailer wheel, knock
the dust cap off with a couple of
light hammer blows, then remove
the cotter pin, axle nut and the
outside bearing.

Slide the wheel off the axle and
lay it face down. Pry off the
grease seal with a screwdriver,
then lift out the other bearing.
Soak both sets in kerosene or
some other soivent.

Inspect the rollers to make sure
they aren’t rusted or pitted. If

they are, replace them. Replace
them also if they have a bluish
tint, indicating an overheat condi-
tion.

Also check the hub’s outer races
for pitting. Replace as necessary
at a marine dealership, and pick
up a new oil seal.

Next, pack the bearings with
marine-grade wheel bearing
grease. Grease the outer races and
the hub, then replace the inner
bearing.

Seac the new grease seal with a
couple of hammer taps. Slip the
hub onto the axle as well as the
outer bearing. Tighten the axle

nut; spin the wheel a couple of

times to make sure it’s turning
freeiy. (If it isn’t, loosen the nut a
bit.)

Insert a new cotter pin and
bend back its arm to lock the nut
in place. Replace the dust cover.
