IN HER OWN WORDS Do most people appreciate the volunteer work you do?: “1 think most of the people [ work with realize that hard work is the only thing that gets things done. I don’t hnow if they appreciate me as much as they appreciate that together we're doing something. Ive been very fortunate that in everywhere I've gone I've worked with really wonderful people. That’s a side benefit to volun- teerism, that I've gained some wonderful friends and contacts. It’s not all one way, you gain a lot from being a volunteer.” What does your family think about your volunteerism?: ‘‘I have Children learned to be self-sufficient From page 78 distinguished service award from the B.C. While she enjoys her volunteer work, Brink admits too many people take volunteers for granted. “But I also think that often it’s something personal that touches AFTER HOURS Criminal Matters Only 926-3181 TRANSIT SERVICE ARDAGH HUNTER TURNER Barristers & Solicitors Personal Injury FREE INITIAL CONSULTATION [ 986-4366 | corer #300-1401 LONSDALE NORTH VANCOUVER, BC. told my children that one of the reasons [ have been as busy as | have is that | wanted them to recognize that my generation was probably the last that was able to choose whether to work or not to werk. “| said: ‘You will be in a double income situation because that’s just the way the world is evolving’. | think they recognize that because | am a busy person, while t have time for them, [ am also able to contribute to their lives just by things [ know are happening in the city and around the province.”* Does it take a fot of patience to be a volunteer?: ‘Yes, because for you and you realize that a volun- teer is helping you. It is often that that is when you realize how much volunteers do.” And what about the number of volunteers out there? Are there enough or should there be more? “t think more pecple should be doing it. There's been a lot of cynicism in the last five years. | think with the mounting provin- cial and federal debt that we're going to have to do a lot more things for ourselves. It's just that different. people have different agendas. That requires patience.
