Logging blamed for rising creek

LOGGING AND lot clearing in
North Vancouver District and re-
cent heavy rainfall in th. Lower
Mainland are causing dangerously
high water levels in a creek runn-
ing through the property of a
Prospect Road heritage home, ac-
cording to the home’s owner.
Umeeda Switlo charges that
logging of four acres on a private
lot above her street, combined
with nearby lot clearing of four
acres for the Barker property res-
idential development, has

dramatically increased the runoff
into Thain Creek, pushing huye
boulders downstream and
threatening to wipe out two
bridges on her property.

“There were boulders the size
of half my body that went down
that creek and they were just
missing the posts of the bridge.”"
Switlo said.

But the director of engineering
for North Vancouver District said
any impact from the nearby
land-clearing activity should be

Bui the district, fie said, will in-
stall debris barriers above the
cuivert that crosses Prospect Road
to catch logs, tree parts and other
anyects that could be washed
downstream. The district may also
put smaller rocks at the discharge
end of the culvert.
