IT WAS a wonderfully
happy time last Sunday ai
the second annual Bob
Smith Jazz Tribute at Drew
Burns Commodore Cabaret.

More than 700 music fans
showed up to salute the memory
of the popular Vancouver Sun and
CRC jazz columnist who died ear-
ly last year.

To celebrate his life, a scholar-
ship has been set up to provide
funds for promising music stu-
dents at Vancouver Community
College. It was Bob Smith's
widow, DeeDee, who made the
official presentation of two $600
music scholarships to (wo Van-
couver Community College stu-
dents, Lindsay Ma:Donald and
Greg Nichol.

The afternoon headliners were
Dave Robbins and his Big Band,
Lance Harrison's [Dixieland Sex-
tet, 5th Avenue’s Alan Matheson
sextet, and the Tenor Sax Summit
with veterans Fraser MacPherson
and Roy Reynolds.

It was also the premiere per-
formance of North Vancouver res-
ident Paul Ruhland’s composition
that he entitled Chris, a haunting
reverie of the life and times of the
