By MICHAEL BECKER News Reporter Some Dollarton area residents are howling mad about a plan that would see a section of the North Vancouver park opened to free- running dogs all year round. The park is currently designated as a leashed area for dog use be- tween Oct. 1 and April 15 only. But a number of Dollarton resi- dents have been lo¥bying council to open the park up to allow freer access to dogs. In letters to North Vancouver District Counci!, doggie-walk ad- vocates argue tat since the district and city implemented policy on where dogs are permitted in municipal parks and_ recreation areas, Dollarton and Deep Cove dog ownes have been been given the sho end of the leash. They say they need more public area to work out their canines. Degs are prohibited access to a portion of Myrtle Park and are permitted on leash in Wickenden Park. On-leash access is allowed to Deep Cove and Panorama parks, Oct. 1 to April 15. But counci! has given first teading to a bylaw that would allow dogs and their walkers unrestricted access to a trail runn- ing through the north side of Cates park, beginning west of the tennis courts and running to the western boundary of the park. Said Carol Palleson, who lives adjacent to the park and has, to her dismay, szen it go to the dogs: “It’s a nice little park here and we want to keep it pristine and free of dog pollution. The trail is near the tennis courts, the picnic area and the children’s play area. I've lived here for 25 years and | see that we have a lot more young families and children using the park. J run through the park, and just the other day a guy was here with five dogs and he was hitting tennis balls for the dogs to chase after.”’ Area resident Rick Anderson, a member of the Preserve Cates Ac- ATUESDAY HURRY DOWN FOR SPECTACULAR SAVINGS ON OVERST OGKED TEMS PuUSS 190 s OF ITEMS AT OUR GUARANTEED EVERYDAY REGULAR LOW PRICES WE OLYMPUS Y/ KODAK FILM Susper compact TV kdoal for gporments. os 0seconc set Footures full on-screen. Said Anderson: ‘‘It’s naive to think that an accident won’t hap- pen. It’s a keg of dynamite waiting to explode. If my kid gets bitten and the district is sued, is the district going to fall back on some implied risk factor?’ Residents, proposing a complete ban on dogs in Cates Park, are gathering a petition.
