2 - Friday, November 17, 1989 - North Shore News More volunteers needed to support disaster plan RECOVERY AFTER a major disaster on the North Shore is dependent upon the community’s involvement before misfortune strikes. Officials gathered at a recent North Vancouver meeting on disaster preparedness called for more volunteers to support emergency plans already in place. Emergency Social Services (ESS), a component of the North Shore Disaster Plan, has scheduled By MICHAEL BECKER News Reporter a two-night course to provide training for people interested in volunteering to staff ESS evacua- . tion reception centres. The evacua- tion centres would be set up to provide 24-hour care and housing for North Shore residents dislocated in the event of a disaster. Course participants will be taught emergency preparedness and stress management skills. Both sessions are free of charge and will be held at recCentre Lonsdale, from 7 to 9:30 p.m. To work effectively, ESS re- quires a large poo) of volunteers to call upon at short notice. ESS is mandated to provide the necessary human-care response following the emergency deployment of police, fire and ambulance services. The reception centres will provide im- mediate shelter, feeding, personal support and information to displaced residents. Said Rupert Downing, North Vancouver District social planner and ESS director: ‘‘Communities have to be as self-sufficient as possible, but there also needs to be a long-term recovery plan. It takes some people a long time to get over the trauma following a disaster,” he said.
