N. Shore Jews commemorate Passover

NORTH SHORE families will join
others around the world in com-
memorating Passover, which
begins tonight, April 19.

Passover is regarded by Jews as
one of the most important Jewish
festivals. The eight-day holiday
marks the liberation of the Jews
from slavery in Egypt more than
3,000 years ago, when Moses led
them into the desert to Mount

Sinai, where he received the Ten
Commandments from God.

“It’s (Passover) a freedom festi-
val. That’s the main idea behind
it,’’ said Horst Sachs, president of
the North Shore’s Har EI con-
gregation.

Rabbi Yitzchak Wineberg of the
Vancouver Lubavitch says
Passover is more than just simply
reminiscing about historical events.

“The festival of Passover de-
mands, by learning from the histo-
ry of the children of [srae!l in
Egypt, a reappraisal of one’s self
and one’s degree of confidence and
faith.”’

On the first ‘‘seder,’’ the
Passover meal, families read from
the Haggadah, which relates the
story of the holiday.

The Passover meal is made up of

specifi ic foods which hold symbolic
meaning — a mixture of nuts and
apples becomes the symbol of
slavery; bitter herbs is the bit-
terness of bondage; an egg, the
symbol of rebirth; and a shank
bone, the symbol of the Passover
offering.

“Everyone must drink four cups
of wine (during the course of the
evening) and keep sober,”’ said

-— preparation for Passover, all
bread is removed from the house
— only flat, cracker-like bread
known as “matzoh’’ is aliowed. A
separate set of dishes and pots and
pans replace everyday dinnerware.

seder on April 20.
