LEARN ABOUT recycling this
weekend ai Lynn Canyon Ecology
Centre.

October is Recycle Month in the
Greater Vancouver Regional
District (GVRD) and the ecology
centre plans to celebrate, Oct. 1
and 2, by giving out such items as
the new GVRD recycle guide, free
bumper stickers and pins, designs
for your own compost box and in-
formation on hazardous waste.

On Saturday, Oct. | at 2 p.m.
the centre will show two videos for
children about recycling. Follow-
ing the videos, staff will ‘‘dissect’’
two bags of household garbage to
find out how many recyclable
items are normally thrown away.

Sunday, Oct. 2 from 2 to 4 p.m.
there will be paper recycling
demonstrations.

The ecology centre reports that
every year the District of North
Vancouver recycles approximately
2,000 tons of paper through the
blue bag pick-up program. That
figure translates into 340,000 trees
saved every year. The recycled
paper also saves over two million
cubic feet of space in the landfill
site.

Each household that recycles
paper saves one tree a year. At
present, 33 per cent of the house-
holds in the District of North Van-
couver participate in the paper
pick-up.
