Reuben, a rare hybrid macaw, is in the middle of hot and heavy training for a cameo role in an up- coming movie, and a North Van- couver couple are coaching him all the way. The whole project is rather ‘hush-hush’’ at the moment, and Golinksy says he can’t reveal the name of the movie as yet. But a lot will depend on if Reuben can just relax and be himself. “He’s still very much a big baby,’’ comments Golinsky, who with wife Mary Alice trains birds for T.V. and movies from their Lynn Valley studio. ‘‘But he’s re- ally a ham,’’ he says of the one year old bird. Reuben, however, shouldn’t have much trouble with the role, coming from @ long line of birds in entertainment. He also has to learn how to talk, which could be “ta bit tricky,’’ but the Golinskys are keeping their fingers crossed. Reuben will be in training for fifteen minute periods, two to three times a day. The process is based on a reward system, so every time Reuben succeeds at something he gets a sunflower seed treat. It all sounds like fun, but the Golinskys’ job isn’t always easy. ‘Nature has to bend to meet the director’s demands,”’ says Mary Alice, but directors don’t always get what they want. Creating swarms of birds or getting birds to talk can often be hard to do. The Golinskys’ company, “A Tropical Parrotdise’’ in Lynn Valley, has been going strong for eignt years now. Some of their previous clients (birds, that is) have appeared in movies such as Haunting Passion, starring Jane Seymour. The couple also visits hundreds of parrots on a house-call basis, providing beak, nail and feather trimming, health and nutrition tips.
