Whatever the result, the management of School District 44 seems likely to take on an distinctly new complexion. Electing four of the seven trustees, the District has (he majority voice on the Board. This year veteran Dorothy Lynas — seeking a Idth term alter 26 years service — is the only one of the four 1984-1986 District incumbents running for re-election. Thus, next year’s board is guaranteed a minimum of three completely fresh faces and could possibly have four. Aside from Lynas herself, four of the outside con- testants and their records to date are already familiar to the electorate in varying degrees. Don Bell, three-term District mayor who retired undefeated in 1982 to return to private business, needs little introduction to District voters. Nor, fo many, does Anne Macdonald, widow of the late Judge Malcolm Macdonald, daughter of late North Van High principal ‘‘Mickey’’ McDougall and founder of the Community Arts Council. Sue Cook is a well known parent-school activist. And Salim Kaderali ran previously in 1984. In the short time remaining voters should also examine carefully the credentials of new- comers Jeremy Dalton, Gerry Martins, Richard Walton and Don Williams — for possible uncut dia- SUNDAY WEONESDAY = FHIDAY chnewer a 1139 Lonsdale Ave. North Vancouver, B.C. The new blood available suggests a greater ‘‘unily in moderation”? on the next Board than has sometimes been the case in the past. B.C.’s leading academic school district needs collaboration, not confrentation, at the top. REMEMBRANCE DAY flashback from one who was there 70 years ago, courtesy of Doris Harborne of North Van. Some time ago she came across a letter containing a comic drawing (unfortunately too faded to print) and the following handwritten poem: What Is this slimy, disma! hole Where oft I’m lurking like a mole And cursing Germans heart and soul? —my DUGOUT! Where is it that, beneath the floor, The water's rising more and more And where my roof's a broken door? —my DUGOUT! Where is it that I try to sleep Betwixt alarms, when up [leap And dash through water four feet deep? —my DUGOUT! Where is it that PM) catch a chill And lose my only quinine pitt, And probably remain until I'm dug out? —my DUGOUT! The wry humor of Mrs. Har- borne’s dad, then Pte. G. Stevens, who wrote these verses in the mud-filled trenches of World War One, may help remind us of things we need to remember on Tuesday. NV firefighters praised very proud, nay, extremely proud Dear Editor: Thank you, firefighters! ; Very recently my car was in- volved in a motor vehicle accident in the London Drugs parking lot on Lonsdale Avenue. The car was hit in the side and the gas tank ruptured, causing gas to leak over the ground. North Vancouver London Drugs’ people called the fire department and in a few minutes up they came. The firemen went into action and, within a very short space of time, had stopped the leak in the tank, and cleaned up and rendered harmless the gas on the ground. Let me tell the people of North Vancouver that they should be of their firefighters and fire department. Their expertise and efficiency can only inspire con- fidence and recognition that they are a highly dedicated group of professionals. Be proud, North Vancouver! Ron Smith Bowen Island
