WV COUNCIL AMENDS PANORAMA ZOWING

residents, West Vancouver
Council took one step
toward closing Panorama
Studios.

The 25-year-old film studio is
earmarked for demolition if Poly-
gon Properties is successful in its
bid to have the site rezoned for
residential use. .

After a public hearing Monday
night, in which a number of strata
council representatives from adja-
cent condominiuin ‘developments
expressed their support for the
rezoning, council voted in favor of
amending the area’s official com-
munity plan.

It was the first step in rezoning

the site for residential use.
- ‘The amendment allows the six-
acre site to have a density of six
units per acre, an increase from the
present. community plan, which
limits density to a maximum of 2.5
units per acre.

had to lay off three of his eight
workers.

“Why has there been such a
heavy push all of a sudden?’”’ he
asked council Monday.

Mayor Marilyn Baker said the
push is on to nab the delinquent
sign posters in the name of fair

play.

“We've spent a " considerable
amount of time and public money
over the last four or five years on
design guidelines for an attractive
Marine Drive plan..I was absolute-
ly horrified to find 12 of these
temporary type signs all over the
place — signs not permitted and
not fitting the bylaw,”’ said Baker.

John Powell said earlier in an in-
terview it is ironic that on the verge
of Panorama’s demolition, the fa-
cility has the potential to turn a
profit, as Vancouver takes an
ever-growing share of the televi-
sion and film market.

-As the sound studio awaits the
final decision on whether it will be
bulldozed, television shows, com-
mercials and feature movies are
being shot on site, Powell said,
adding that others would be lined
up if the studio’s future was more
secure.

But Panorama has become an
unwanted white elephant to the
hundreds of residents living beside
the studio in condominium com-
plexes. ~*

and creating too much noise for
adjacent residents.

Council agreed, but not without
some concern for the fate of light
industry in West Vancouver.

Panorama might not be the ap-
propriate location for a film stu-
dio, council should consider if and

Once the motion to amend the
official community plan is finally
adopted, the way will be open for
Polygon properties to apply for .
rezoning and a development per-
mit.

There will be at least one more
public hearing before Polygon’s
development is approved.
