60 - Friday, December 13, 1985 - North Shore News Buying for the worid traveller From Page 59 the departing traveller? The gift shops will hate me but: *A lunch out, about four days before I leave. *A funny card *A promise to feed, at least once, any relative or furry friend of mine. If J hut a dog, I'd appreciate 4 atcuye to walk the beast at least every now and again, *A dinner cooked on the night I return. And if the house was clean, the bed made up with fresh sheets and a ‘‘Welcome Home’’ note pinned to my pillow, I'd be forever grateful. *Someone who would pledge to unpack my _ suitcase! Honestly, that’s the job J dread more than any other. In fact, 1 still haven't com- pletely unpacked from my last trip. *A promise to cope with any problem that arises - short of sudden death - while I’m away. And, a further prom- ise to keep me uninformed, I mean totally in the dark, un- til a week after Jreturn. - As a frequent traveller, I’ve got nearly every little gizmo I need to get me from point A to B. Hell, if fsawa need, I'd have bought it 15 years ago. But, there are people that don’t hop on and off pianes as often as a travel writer does. Here are some ques- tions that you should ask yourself before buying anything: 1, How much does it weigh? 2. How often will it be used? 3. Does it fit into the systems elsewhere? (Consider elec- trical stuff - does it convert to that 220 jazz that nearly the whole. world uses?) Now that you've got the picture in perspective, what can you buy a traveller? Consider: *Portable games. I really like my folding cribbage board that houses a deck of cards (roughly $4, not in- cluding cards). Our travell- ing Scrabble board could be improved upon - ours _ is wallet-sized but it has sort of a glue system (plastic) which is a pain in the neck to pry off. Better to buy the larger size magnetic type. Kinsmen host THE NORTH Shore’.
