lrania DESPITE FEARS of one area resident that the municipality is ‘‘asking for trouble’’ and a short procedural hassle, the Iranian Youth Association has won permission to celebrate its Spring New Year in Ambleside Park. West Vancouver council granted approval for the March 20 event Monday night. Semiak Farah, president of the youth association, calmed fears that the celebration could lead to trouble by poin- ting out the event will be cultural and not politicat. ‘For 2,500 years, all Ira- nians, regardless of their religion, have celebrated the first day of spring as the first day of the new year,’* Farah told council in a letter seeking support for the event. The procedural wrangle came as Ald. Diana Hutchin- son attempted to have the * matter referred to the Parks and Recreation Advisory Committee for comment before approval. ‘“‘] strongly feel the committee, since it’s an ad- visory board, should be given the opportunity to advise,’’ Hutchinson argued. She won the support of Ald. Blackburn and Broken- shire but was opposed by Finlay, Rowntree and Grif- fiths, leaving her motion tied. Mayor Derrick Humphreys N. The two make-work pro- grams, to be funded partly under the Summer Canada Works Program and the En- vironment 200 program, would consist of the clean-up and development of two greenbelt areas (Cortex Cres- cent and Westover Road), and the development of an Ecology Centre, a program on parks and environmental conservation directed specifically at ‘‘English as a second language’’ persons. If the District's applica. tions are successful, the federal government would contribute $3.65 per hour per worker, and up to double that amount for a supervisor. The government would also meet the costs of overhead, equipment and material.
