Cl6 - Sunday News, November 30, 1980 get some help from you about the three problem areas that you say are very common in trying to im- prove relationships — power, sex and money. My ‘first letter was about power straggies and now I want to pose some questions about money. Money has always been a problem to me. I spend a lot of time and energy over not having it or about how to get it. P's nearly always afraid about my debts, or afraid about running up debts, or afraid of some catastrophe that will leave me penniless. I worry and plan and work and stew about money. How does this affect my relationships? Well, I tend to be sort of stingy for one thing. Fm really not stingy but I'm afraid of being generous. Then, because | don’t like being stingy, the day after I've been very careful about how much I Meet the QUESTION: Are you acquainted with PPC? It is a program to combat some of the dif- ficulties im schools. I have heard just enough about it to catch my interest, but I don’t know Ef it is in use In Canada. STEW ART: I know very little about it. PPC stands for Positive Peer Culture. It was first in- troduced in Canada _ in nearly always followed up with my being a spendthrift beyond all sense. I worry one day sbout being niggardly and the next about being a big spender. So — where money ts concerned, I'm hardly ever really happy. I guess I'm suffering the results of the old Biblical saying, “Money &s the root of all evil.” Have you got some suggestions for me? STEWART: To seek an- swers on this complex topic we would need to take part in an unhurried series of talks rather than a brief answer as part of a short column. However, here are a few ideas for you to think through as starters. First, money is NOT the root of all evil. I believe the whole quote which you partially remember is, “The PPC Ontario's Downsville Secondary School, under Ken Morris. Certain aspects of PPC seem to be somewhat similar to the story of the Love Project's beginnings in New York's Jefferson High. The little I know of PPC is rather intriguing. Perhaps you would like to read an article in the current issue of Homemaker’s, written by Eileen Morris. No letters from cat lovers QUESTION: [Id love to know how many rabid letters you received from cat-lovers after your remarks recently. I thought you were right on, but Pll bet they tried to carl your hair! STEWART: | don't think I pjhe PermSale Nov.17- Dec.6 bratds mens Coloring children said anything to mie cat- lovers. Anyway — nary a letter has come — so far. Perhaps cat-lovers are not as fussy as you think. LOVE of money is the root of all evil.” Money is O.K., in fact it is’very nice stuff. In itself it is quite harmless and | very useful. Your attitude toward it causes the troubles. There’s one thing to think through. A second “stretcher” is this: In a sense, money is not YOURS. Try thinking of money as not being your POSSESSION, not being something you OWN. Money (and all “things”) are for our use, but, if it belongs to anyone, it belongs to the whole family — the whole human family. See it as something you are entrusted with to use well. It is not your stuff, but it is available to you to utilize or invest or give away, in a manner that will be pleasing to your higher Self. In a sense, it your privilege to act as a sort of steward, or an agent of your higher Self when you use money. Give those ideas your best thinking. I have a hunch they will save you from the worry and anxiety that go along with being niggardly one day and the next day a spendthrift. If you are waiting for a windfall, be grateful meanwhile for your breezefall! Where to retreat QUESTION: Is there any facility that you know of that is available to North Shore people who, like me, would like, on occasion, to get away from the fuss and hurry and noise of every day life and, for a day or two, just be quiet and without any responsibilities? STEWART: Rent a _ hotel room and go into” un- disturbed retreat. Or, you might phone Cenacle House (it’s in the book) and enquire of the good sisters what they offer in the way of quiet, undisturbed facilities. That may be exactly what you are seeking.
