It. didn’ t make any owe et Tc Gi judgements thing like that. or any~ Kk showed what the probiem was, and how some people were ‘dealing with it. My wife and I have five sons. Before our fifth son was born we didn’t think children and | we > wanted to adopt a baby. We went to several adoption agencies, but because of our four healthy sons, we were put on the bottom of every list. There were no children available. None whatso- ever. When they were bringing the babies over from Viet i'Nam and. Cambodia a i friend. of ours who was one of the people in charge said ‘‘We’ll get you a little girl. | Don’t worry about that’’ 7 When she came back to this country she said there were so many people with no children at all who were begging for these children, would we release her from her promise. We said of course, we wouldn’t want to deprive anyone else of having a child. The incident showed me_ how badly i children were wanted in this world. When my wife had a miscarriage and lost a child several years before that, it was a very real thing to us. I must confess that for one whole day I was really a little irrational. Of course, I can imagine how she must | have felt after carrying the child. I remember when we told our boys - at that time they were about eight, seven, six and Nicky was not quite three, so he really | didn’t know what was going fiell him on. To the boys that child was as real as any child who was with them there at the table. My oldest boy was in tears that day, We didn’t in any dreary manner or anything like that. We presented it as . to have another ‘said City Treasurer-Collector happened, not going baby right now. The second.and third boys | asked questions - about | whether we would know if | the baby was a boy or girl, whether we would be abie to see the baby, that kind of | thing. Our oldest boy was struck almost dumb. The horror of it all really affected him immediately. The other two felt the same way. That afternoon they . were all very sad, and wanted to know if we were going io nave another baby. i Of course, we didn’t know at that time. We told them we would say a lot of J prayers or Something and | maybe see. what would | happen. You can’t fool a child. To a child one and one equals two and nothing else. When a child asks you what abortion is, and you tell the - child, he understands the reality of it no matter how you couch the phrases. Parents can say they don’t want to bring a child into the world because it’s not. wanted and would be unhappy. They can give all the reasons they want and | that kid will come back and say: ‘‘You mean you kill him.”’ It’s just as direct as that. It is alive, it is human life, and if you end that life, you’re killing. Used with permission of Lifelines, P.O. Box 3177, Sherwood Park, Alberta, Canada.
