Retirement is a foreign word (o this senior citizen who still works four days a week with his daugh- ter Jan Thompson at an insurance and annuities firm. On Thursday, the 74-year-old student graduated from Simon Fraser University (SFU) after he earned his bachelor of arts degree in anthropology, one course at a time each semester for 16 years. “I overheard my daughter and her friends making plans to enrol in a political science course, and | thought I would tag along for the ride,’” says Munro. ‘‘No one, in- cluding myself, expected me to get this far, let alone decide to go further and continue with my studies.’” Munro says he was a slow learner as a ‘‘15-year-oid smart ass kid’? growing up in New Westminster. He would later end up quitting school to go work in the family fur business. ‘*T travelled everywhere trading furs; in fact I met my wife on a business trip to Melbourne, Australia,’ says Munro. He later enlisted with the Seaforth Highlanders and was in- jured while fighting in Italy. “A stretcher bearer helping me off the battlefield said 1 was lucky the wound looked bad enough to By Surj Rattan News Reporter keep me from seeing any more ac- tion. Believe me, by this time most of us wanted to be home more than we wanted to be heroes,’’ says Munro. Munro adds that he would en- courage students to stay in school. ‘Education is ongoing, exciting, with a real sense of accomplish- ment and fulfilment. Don’t wait to start,’’ says Munro. ‘You can usually find room in a class and learn where to dig for information and who to ask.”’ He adds that older studenis should not be intimidated by younger students. “Why, I've just finished a joint project with two women 50 years younger than me. We had a great rapport and did a good job,’’ says Munro. ‘‘The rewards can be sur- prising.”’ He adds that his relationship with his 23-year-old granddaugh- ter has been enhanced by his tak- ing courses. “*Between meeting expenses and making the grades, you'll never work harder than you have in get- ting your degree,’’ says Munro.
