-nosen ne Everyone believes the handsome one’s the hero - only Bernie knows different Hero *& & Rated Mature (at the Park & Tilford, Granville, Station Square, Richport, Coquitlam, Scott 72 and Clearbrook cinemas) EMEMBER THOSE heart-to-hearts you had with Dad? Sure you do ... “Not all, but most supervisors are crooks,”’ “Keep a low profile,” and “There’s no truth, just various layers of bulls--t.” With golden bon mots like those to his impressionable young san, who would believe that small-time chiseller Bernie Laplante (Dustin Hoffman) would risk his neck by entering a burning airplane to rescue 54 passengers? Right. No one. Despite the fact that it’s true. Not that he was the “Angel of Flight 104” as the -media have dubbed him. While he was grumbling and cruising about in the smoke carry- ing out TV reporter Gale Gayley (Geena Davis), he couldn't resist her purse. With only a shoe left behind as evidence, Gale’s unerring nose for news smells a story. The hunt is on for someone to fill the mystery man’s 10-Bs. A million-dollar offer and bingo, John Bubher (Andy Garcia) smells the perfect candidate. A Nam vet, homeless, handsome and with a real streak of courage — everyone ‘ wants to believe he’s the hero. Only Bernie knows different. David Webb People’s script Tim Beli FILM REVIEW wants to have a refreshing cynical edge, but can’t quite bring itself to attack media manipuiation and image fabrication. The characters all have a warm cenire. Bernie ‘s a two-bit thief and a questionatie father figure, but unearths his basic goodness when a child asks for his help. Sure the television news honchos, led by an unbilled Chevy Chase, score good ratings, but it’s not played up as manipulative since the America-wide feel-geod wave has frequent beneficial side effects. (Hey, kids come out of comas with a little pep talk from the fake “Angel.”’) Hero features fine perfomances by Davis and Hoffman, occasional humor and a promising premise. But where there should be a hard centre, there’s just creme feeling. Hear My Song *& * *& (Para- mount Home Video) Rated Mature Now here are two rogues who don’t sugarcoat their flaws, but still we like them. Shady promotion man Micky PREP POTEET &6 Script can't quite bring itself to attack media manipulation. 99 O'Neill (Adrian Dunbar) offers singer Franc Cinatra to a gullible {and apparently illiterate) audience while romancing a woman, Nancy (Tara Fitzgerald), without actually admitting ‘I love you.” But he goes too far when he books famed Irish tenor Josef Locke for a triumphant return from self-imposed exile. The coup elec- tifies everyone. Nancy’s mother, who had a brief affair with Josef prior to his hasty departure, is almost as anx- ious to see him again as Her Ma- jesty’s revenue men are. Only this Josef Locke turns out to be an im- poster. Disgraced, broke and out one lover, Micky heads for the Emeratd Isle to track down the real McKoy and convince him to perform. Some great Irish scenery, one- of-a-kind characters and a charm- ing magic permeates this little film. The only drawback is the thoroughly American Ned Beatty attempting an irish accent and some unconvincing lip-synching. But then again, it’s Hear My Song, not Read My Lips.
