Emergency services LIONS BAY'S dream of a new emergency services centre is soon to be realized: tenders have closed and work on the new building is due to begin shortly. The $600,000 project, scheduled to be completed by mid-summer, will involve the construction of what Lions Bay Coun. Dale Klatt calls a ‘‘contemporary home-style"* building that will house Emergency 4 Health Services, Lions Bay's vol- unteer Fire Department, aud the Lions Bay Search and Rescue team. Although Klatt notes that the village will definitely benefit by having the emergency services building, he says the main ra- tionale for constructing the build- ing is to respond to emergencies outside, not inside, Lions Bay. “Ninety-five per cent of our ac- tivity is in Howe Sound,"" he said. Responding to accidents on Highway 99 is a major function of the fire and ambulance personnel based in the village. Last month, said Klatt, the am- bulance responded to 126 calls outside Lions Bay, and only two within the municipality. Funding for the project came from a $182,500 GO B.C. grant and money from Emergency Health Service's 20-year lease of the building which was paid in ad- vance. The centre is being con- structed on villaze-owned Jand valued at over $160,000. The two-storey structure will contain four bays, two for the fire department's trucks, one for the ambulance and one for the Search and Rescue team’s vehicle. The upper floor will include kitchens, offices and training rooms that will 9 - Wednesday, February 21, 1990 - North Shore News centre planned for Lions Bay be divided among the emergency services sharing the building.
