THE DESIGN talents of Camosun
College fine furniture students are
showcased in an impressive collec-
tion of western red cedar outdoor
furniture on display at the Design
Vancouver Roundhouse exhibition
to Feb. 19,

Titled Furniture for the Land-
scape, the exhibit is sponsored by
the Council of Forest Industries in
British Columbia (COFI).

The cedar benches, tables,
lounges and chairs were all design-
ed and built by 16 students in the
Camosun College Fine Furniture
Program as part of a design com-
petition sponsored jointly by the
Victoria regional college and
COFI. Certificates to all partici-
pants and cash awards for the
three winning designs were provid-
ed by COFI, which also donated
the cedar.

Vancouver landscape architect
Ron Rule was chairman of the
jury, which included cedar special-
ty manufacturer Bob Landucci,

Duncan McRae, director of col-
leges and technical programs for
the B.C. ministry of advanced
education and job training.

Karen Robertson won top
honors for her classically inspired
five-piece set of chairs, bench and
table. One of seven women in the
class, Robertson was given high
marks from the jury for her fine
craftsmanship as well as design ex-
cellence.

Dirk Ferguson's elegant bench/
table combination received second
prize. Third prize was awarded to
Darrel Alexander for his tradi-
tional set of bench, table and
chairs. Two other items, a chaise
by Bonnie Schmaus and a bench
by Dan Gimmer, received special
merit commendations from the
jury.

The Furniture for the Landscape
collection will be displayed at the
B.C. Business Info Centre in Van-
couver later this spring.
