His knowledge of the local mountains is impressive and stories of his experiences, especially on Hollyburn, are captivating as he speaks of such enchanting things as the chairway to the stars. Bob says he firmly believes “that outdoor living and recre- ational activities can expand your value and appreciation of life cremendously. Nature is a wonderful teacher.” His experiences and skills do not stop with mountains and trails, but extend to the sea, highway travel, and bot- tling the Tapp wine. After graduatng, Bob signed on with Shell Oil Refinery in Vancouver where he stayed for six years. He then travelled throughout B.C. and Alberta, representing various companies, selling heavy equipment and lubri- cants, until he retired in 1983. At age 13 Bob started ski- ing, but it was on Good Friday in 1942 that he first hiked to the Hollyburn Ski Camp. Since then, Bob has tied to go to the camp each year on this day. During the winter of 1944-45 he travelled by ferry from the foot of Columbia Street across the harbour to the ferry landing in West Vancouver, He then rode the - bus to 25th and Marine Drive, where he caught the Hollyburn Acrial Tram, affec- tionally called “the chairway to the stars,” up the mountain to the “Elby” or ski-school cabin. . Seventy feet of it fell at the summit of Strachan Mountain and 30 feet at our cabin, Holmenkollen. The front porch broke off under the load.” Through the years, Bob and Greta have held executive positions in various cabin own- ers’ clubs and ski organizations at Hollyburn.
