GIRLS who like to sing
will have a choir all their
own this fall.

Cecilia Girls’ Choir begins

tehearsals in September
under the direction of Gerald
van Wyck, music director of
the British Columbia Boys’
Choir (BCBC).

for 10 years.

Van Wyck, who is also the
head of choral activities at
Vancouver Community
College, said the time is right
for a girls’ choir on the North
Shore.

“At the B.C. Boys’ Choir,
we often get calls, name not

The community-based
choir, which takes its name
from the patron saint of
music, is for girls aged nine to
19, whose only prerequisite is

“We're looking for girls
who ‘enjoy singing ... who
spend some of their time

- singing around the house.” If

they have the interest, “we'll
take it from there — teach
them how to read music and
develop their voices,” he said.

At the same time, the choir
would be challenging enough
for the more experienced
singers, said van Wyck.

A wide variety of musical
styles will be explored:
sacred to secular, ancient: to
modern. There will be no
rock ’n’ roll or showtunes,

however.

“The repertoire leans

toward the classical end of the
musical spectrum,” said van
Wyck.

Auditions take place at the
church in June and again in
late August. Weekly
tehearsals begin Thursday,
Sept. 12.
