And, we’re all looking for destinations that are within a reasonable dri- ving time and offer some- thing pleasant by way of scenery, and provide a2 vari- ety of options for the active and the not so inclined. National Geographic calls the Cascade Loop in Washington State “one of America’s grandest, most spectacular drives” and the North Cascades route, Highway 20 from Burlington to Winthrop proves them right. The entire loop includes the Highway 20 section just mentioned, carrying on to Wenatchee (Hwys. 153 and 97) and then west again to Everett, Whidby Island via the Mukilteo Ferry, up Whidby on Highway 20 and back to the I-5. The entire loop is a good choice for a week or 10 days of leisurely travel. Taken in sections, it’s ideal for weekends. The Mount Vernon- Whidby section is particularly pop- ular with visitors from the North Shore. On this trip, we took the RV — ideal for this sort of trip. In fact, campgrounds appear to outnumber motels, especially in the North * Cascades National Park where there are no motels al all. Since we got away at lunch on Friday, we chose to stay in a camp- ground in Burlington Friday night. You're invited to... There’s a large playground, heated indoor pool — al] the amenitics. Take exit 232 (Cook Road) off the 1-5 and follow the signs. It isn’t cheap — about US$22 but it’s one of those reliable stops where you can expect quality. i'm giving this place quite a mention, but it's also the ideal stop for anyone who isn’t one bit inter- ested in mountain scenery but is anxious to hit the Pacific Edge Outlet Mail in Burlington. The trails are very clearly marked and many have paved parking areas. . Now, how to get a map of these trails! Lots of tuck. 1 started by call- ing the Vancouver office of the U.S. government travel service. Got a recording. Dialed the 1-900 number given. Got a run-around and a tol] number to call another office. And, reluc- tantly, the toll-free number for Washington State Travel. They told me they could mail me a brochure that might contain an address I could then write for spe- cific information. Geez. I’m tem- porarily stumped, but will keep try- ing. During the winter, the Methow Valley (Winthrop area) is renowned for cross-country skiing. It’s true — every few miles along the way, waterfalls trickle or gush down the cliffs lin- ing the road, Large ones are named and there is often a parking spot for you to take a break and a photo.
