8 ° oundary confusion adds insult to watershed injury Dear Editor: In June, 1 was shocked by the decision to allow clearcut logging in the Capilano watershed. Such .an extreme form of “management” has no place in our watersheds, as it is not an environmentally sound ‘method of forest management. _-Now I read that insult is to be added to the watershed’s injury. Ite appears that. approval has been given to clearcut even “beyond ‘the. boundaries recom- mended by ecological consultant Donald »McLennan, hired by the GVRD (as reported in the North Shore News of Oct. 8). CA motion to investigate ap- parent.. discrepancies a . maps .prepared by the GVRD and those’: prepared by. the . Society - Promoting Environmen- tal Conservation - (SPEC) was who ‘was - between . willing to question authority is defeated based on the sentiment expressed by board member Bill Fomich that ‘‘either we believe the administration or we get’ rid of them.’’ That sounds more like volun- tary dictatorship than democratic process, * It would seem that a majority of the board’ members simply do not want to go to the trouble of checking the facts for themselves. lt would seem that it is easier to accept the word of the ad- ministration than to actually look at the evidence, or even to ask ‘the opinion of McLennan, who has not yet seen the ap- proved boundaries. A board that is unable or un- not acting in the public interest. __(The approved motion to ask.. McLennan to clarify the plans was only a lame attempt to mollify critics. A letter confirming or refuting the boundaries will have little value after the approval to log has been granted. I realize it may take more ef- fort to get it right the first time, but is that not preferable to spending years trying to rectify a bad decision? Acknowledgements are due to Pat Wilson and Mark Sager who expressed concern about the questions raised. Hf only other board members | were also willing to ascertain the facts before approving decisions, we could have more trust in our local authorities. Until that time, we desperately need dedicated groups | like SPEC. . ; Elizabeth McLean North Vanceuver Public should be outraged Dear Editor: . Congratulations to the News for orinting Paul St. Pierre’s column in the Oct. | issue, ‘‘Arrested de- velopment.” : Although I have no. love for hunters, 1 agree it’s time the public woke up and. faced the horrid abuse that occurs to all our food animals every day of their lives, According to the Canadians for the Ethical Treatment. of Food Animals, all our food animals en- dure closed confinement with little or,no fresh air, many are victims of violence inflicted on them dur- ing: transportation (baseball bats, 4 over treatment of animals usually), 25% of the solid waste ‘from the animal is fed right back to it along with a variety of drugs and hormones, and in many cases the animals are not even kifled before undergoing knifing and scalding! Canadian consumers shoutd be outraged at the appalling Jack. of meat inspection ‘at “slaughter houses. ; As Gandhi stated so well, “‘The greatness of a nation can be judged by the way its animals are treated.”” Jane Johnson ‘North Vancouver N.
